So, although I was sick all weekend and had to go to the doctor this morning.....(I now have a healthy dose of horse pills every 5 hours for 10 days! AWESOME!!) We did remember why we had a holiday!
Memorial Day brings up a lot of emotion and pride. I am apart of a very large movement here in the United States trying to defend the constitution (www.the912project.com ); my husband served on the USS Enterprise for 4 years in the Navy, making him a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom; my grandpa serving in the Army; and many others that I have come in contact over the years who have impacted my life for upholding their oath to protect and serve the Constitution of the United States. Memorial Day holds a place in my heart. Jonathan and I have a small flag outside of our house and we have a lot of things in our home that remind us on a daily basis how lucky we are to live in this nation and I just wanted to share some quotes by prophets of the LDS church, who also love this country and feel very deeply about upholding and protecting our constitution. (To help you understand the constitution more fully, in an easy to read manner, the 5000 year leap by W. Cleon Skousen *who is also LDS* he is an amazing Constitutionalist and it will help anyone trying to understand what our founding fathers believed when they first established the Promised Land.)
And so, every true Latter-day Saint has a deep love and respect for the Constitution of this land. ("America: Land of the Blessed" 342) Ezra Taft Benson
And again I say unto you, those who have been scattered by their enemies, it is my will that they should continue to importune for redress, and redemption, by the hands of those who are placed as rulers and are in authority over you—
According to the laws and constitution of the people, which I [the Lord] have suffered to be established, and should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles. (D&C 101:76-77) Joseph Smith Jr.
Have mercy, O Lord, upon all the nations of the earth; have mercy upon the rulers of our land; may those principles, which were so honorably and nobly defended, namely, the Constitution of our land, by our fathers, be established forever. (D&C 109:54) Joseph Smith Jr.
The Constitution of our country [was] formed by the Fathers of liberty. . . . Exalt the standard of Democracy! Down with that of priestcraft, and let all the people say Amen! that the blood of our fathers may not cry from the ground against us. Sacred is the memory of that blood which bought for us our liberty. (HC 3:9) Joseph Smith Jr.
I especially love this one by Joseph Smith Jr.
Hence we say, that the Constitution of the United States is a glorious standard; it is founded in the wisdom of God. It is a heavenly banner; it is to all those who are privileged with the sweets of liberty, like the cooling shades and refreshing waters of a great rock in a thirsty and weary land. It is like a great tree under whose branches men from every clime can be shielded from the burning rays of the sun. . . .
We say that God is true; that the Constitution of the United States is true; that the Bible is true. (TPJS 147-48)
Our Constitution and Bill of Rights guarantee to all our people the greatest freedom ever enjoyed by the public of any great nation. This system guarantees freedom of individual enterprise, freedom to own property, freedom to start one's own business and to operate it according to one's own judgment so long as the enterprise is honorable. The individual has power to produce beyond his needs, to provide savings for the future protection of himself and family. He can live where he wishes and pick any job he wants and select any educational opportunity. (So Shall Ye Reap 151; also in TETB 605; from a baccalaureate address given at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, WY, 4 Jun 1950) Ezra Taft Benson
In concluding, I said: "I love this nation. It is my firm belief that the God of Heaven raised up the founding fathers and inspired them to establish the Constitution of this land. This is part of my religious faith." To me this is not just another nation. It is a great and glorious nation with a divine mission to perform for liberty-loving people everywhere. (CF 79; from an address given at the 16th Annual National Farm Institute, Des Moines, IA, 21 Feb 1953) Ezra Taft Benson
My one fear, and my one anxiety is that I may inadvertently sometime do something or say something that will cast an unfavorable light or bring discredit upon the Church and kingdom of God and the people whom I love so dearly, and upon this great nation which we all love. I pray that this may never happen.
I love this nation of which we are a part. To me it is not just another nation, not just a member of a family of nations. It is a great and glorious nation with a divine mission and it has been brought into being under the inspiration of heaven. It is truly a land choice above all others. I thank God for the knowledge which we have regarding the prophetic history and the prophetic future of this great land of America. . . .
I am grateful for the Founding Fathers of this land and for the freedom they have vouchsafed to us. I am grateful that they recognized, as great leaders of this nation have always recognized, that the freedom which we enjoy did not originate with the Founding Fathers; that this glorious principle, this great boon of freedom and respect for the dignity of man, came as a gift from the Creator. The Founding Fathers, it is true, with superb genius welded together the safeguards of these freedoms. It was necessary, however, for them to turn to the scriptures, to religion, in order to have this great experiment make sense to them. And so our freedom is God-given. It antedates the Founding Fathers. ("Our Duty as Citizens" 918, 920) Ezra Taft Benson
(Ezra Taft Benson also served our nation as Agricultural Secretary and knew many people, including W.Cleon Skousen.)
I firmly believe that Ezra Taft Benson said these or wrote these quotes not only for his time, 30-40 years ago, but to remind us also that Freedom isn't free, and that the Book of Mormon tells us that clearly.
I also attended the Patrick Henry Caucus rally at the Utah state capitol building to help protect and defend states rights. We definitely think it was a success. To see pictures look at my facebook page!
America holds a special place in my heart. There's no place I'd rather live, it's so beautiful, diverse and amazing. We have risen up out of the ashes, by and through the grace of God. We are powerful, special and a blessed people here in America. We constantly out-do the rest of the world, protect, serve and defend the right. And I pray we all realize everyday how lucky we are to live in the only true free nation in the world. We have been given a special duty to uphold that standard and spread it like a fire through the world......are we doing our part? I hope I am, because my religious beliefs run in line with having the freedom the Constitution gives us everyday. I know I'm blessed to live here, and everyday I thank God that he has given me, not only the opportunity but the duty to live here and defend our unalienable rights, given by our Creator.
