This is a TV show not a Talent Search...American Idol Auditions

"Remember this is NOT a talent search, this is a TV show. You may be great but just not what we're looking for." Producer from AI

So, most of you know that I am a singer. Nothing fancy, but I love doing it. I love harmony, singing and making music with others...all the time. I've somewhat gotten out of the "groove" of singing the past few years. I've shyed away from it, not really sure why, probably because I don't think I'm that great.
Anyways.......
Ever since American Idol came on, I thought it would be cool to try out. Never thought I'd get the guts up to do it. (GO figure it would be after I STOPPED singing for a while!! lol) But I just thought now or never.
I went to Denver, got a wonderful hotel via our friends..THANK YOU BRYNN AND ROBERTS family! As soon as I got there I registered immediately...well funny thing...
I felt really gross when I finally got to the mile high city, so I decided I had time to make an effort to look nice. I didn't know what to expect. So I got all ready, and went...all I had to do was get a stupid wristband and ticket! I could've gone in my PJS!!!
10 min later, I was back at the Marriot, got some room service for a yum yum breakfast and slept for only a few hours.

This trip was stressful, I hardly slept at all!

I tried to watch TV, but all I did was sing and kept downloading songs because I didn't know what I wanted to sing...finally about 3 hours before it was time to go to auditions, I finalized my song, Amazing Grace, and I knew it inside out already, and I felt pretty good about singing it....Thank You LeAnn Rimes for being my hero.

(Oh, I also went shopping in denver...Bass Pro Shop and the mall there, very fun.)
I got ready, and I just wore jeans and a cute shirt, nothing fancy...I just wanted to be myself. I was going to wear boots and jeans but I kinda forgot my boots.....whoops!
Auditions is just a whole lot of waiting around. It's not anything fun, you can't eat, sleep or relax...plus when you first get there, everything is for the show, repeating lines constantly, and singing songs for the camera..
..here's the BIG shocker...

Apparently Paula, Randy, Simon and Kara don't even come on the same day. You have to come back! (that's the word on the street, no verification, but so I've heard!)

My favorite thing about the auditions were the people. Not the extremeists, (although they were HYSTERICAL,) but the real people who really just want to make music and sing. Just like me.

I had so much fun singing with all kinds of people, making harmony and just enjoying my time with some extremely talented people. Alot of people who try out who are the best don't make it. The show is looking for such specifics, you have no idea what you are getting into.

10.5 hours later, I made it to the audition table....sang and stood back waiting for my answer...the two producers talked very briefly and asked us all to come up to the table. They told us there are two very good singers in our group, and only one who should keep trying and come back again. I was pulled aside and said I should try again next year because my voice was great.. This gave me a steriod shot straight to my ego...

But, I don't think I'll be trying out again unless they come to SLC or somewhere close...it's a lot and next time I'll be more prepared...It was a wonderful experience and I would do it again. Not for the fame and fortune, but because I love to sing!

Everything you described was exactly how it was for me when I tried out in August 2004. Kind of lame that they don't look for talent first, ya know? But, don't give up. Jordin Sparks auditioned like 3 or 4 times the same year before they accepted her to go on.....and then she ended up being the American Idol!!! Girl, 'N Sync said it best when they said, "You got what it takes."
